Create your first platform game in Unreal Engine 5 - Where we start

Hello everyone My name is Andrs Cruz and I want to show you a little bit of the progress Ive made for the development of my first video game or I hope that at some point in my life it will look like a video game not even a prototype and I want to show you a little bit of where were starting from Although little by little Ive been comparing several things it can be divided into several blocks I do this because as I was telling you in case you also want to develop your first video game The technology doesnt matter But it has to be of this type especially 3D with Unreal or Unity although you can also apply it for example to Flame or 2D games but Im sure it can also be useful to you So I want to show you a little bit about the progress what Ive done Im still prototyping Well Ill give you a little bit of a heads up but thats what I want to show you as I was telling you Unreal

Unreal steep learning curve

As Ive told you a little youve probably already noticed if youre also developing in Unreal its a video game engine that has a bit of a high learning curve at least in my opinion but you have to get to know it by doing small practices by watching some small courses and replicating it After that its recommended that you make a completely clean project and try to base what youve learned on doing things there because theres not much more to say

Platforms to learn how to develop in Unreal Engine

YouTube has helped me a lot with this Later Ill show you what the resources are that I use to learn a little bit about Unreal but its a bit typical some videos from some platforms and then Ill introduce them to you as I say and well a little more obviously YouTube is among them

The development Im doing custom character platforms and some levels

Well here we have the initial level but it has a lot of things just as you can see Excuse the noise but theres no way around it eh Here I have some white boxes that are custom blueprints that Im going to show you little by little How its implemented But and thats what Ill be doing little by little in some videos anyway Right now Ill show you some that Im implementing Im going to give it a play here to stop talking nonsense and here you see here you see that I changed the Player this is a prototype that Im making Its not completely defined yet and thats why its a little amorphous but there I go I did it quickly in Blender and Ill talk about this a little later on then Ill also tell you What are the steps that I took to import the character since there are many videos on YouTube but theyre a little complicated and I found one that I really liked And from there its this good process

Platforms and surfaces

This surface as you can see is to make it slippery here I dont know why he keeps walking something that had to do with later here you can see that he walks and when I stop walking he stops suddenly but here for example he walks that what I did was vary here a little bit there there I let go look and he keeps walking then Ill show you this what I really did little by little Im going to make videos to explain each one of these blueprints so right now I simply want to show you this one that I dont even remember why I did it but there it is that it disappears and shows what this mesh is the circle is inside the square So thats a bit of a joke right now Im doing this Well here I fell

Here is also a surface that is disappearing there are two of them the blueprint is actually two so it will show how they are moving to the place but really there are two one is hidden and the other is shown well the little box where they were jumping obviously the inspiration is in Crash well saving the distances and here I also made a kind of surface for it to do this which is nonsense But this is what will ultimately form the game so here you can see the prototypes that I am making

Of course I have many more just as you can see here if I come to platforms I have many here that I will explain to you little by little everything works maybe someone has some skill or something that they are still manipulating the only thing that doesnt work for me is one of fire that I was making here that I have to continue working on but they are all unique what am I doing to make this type of as they say

Platform games are good choices for developing your first video game

blueprints which are those little boxes that have a certain functionality Well Ive started to play a little bit of what Crash is and several which is where I am as who says getting a little inspiration and according to my knowledge allows it I try to replicate it as best I can of course I always give it a certain element of as who says personality something that I can but thats what Im doing So thats a bit what I wanted to show you at this point again if you want to make your first video game these are the ones that would be recommended or at least I would recommend according to my knowledge that those games are simple games you may want to make an RPG or something like that but I think that as a first video game that would be a bit big because of the options just like if its a Shooter type I think it would also seem quite big to me because of the logic that you have to handle for the enemies above all and also the weapon part would be simple in a real one but a bit like that I think that this type of platform type video games can be more At least for what was commented before because it is very modularized in the end it is a scenario a hallway type level as they say there you place everything nicely and thats it I havent even started doing it yet and

Mario and Crash bandicoot, my inspiration games

What matters here are these types of blueprints that would be here these little boxes that have a certain functionality I already showed you some here and youll build the level from that and youll also need the enemies that I havent worked on but are also going to be Crash type especially because even the Mario ones have more so to speak intelligence that at least some of them follow you the Crash ones just walk from one side to the other so you can see more or less where all this is going which is what I want to do similar to the Crash 1 2 and 3 game especially the one that has a simple jump like this one

Functional prototypes with zero style

So its a bit like that to summarize the idea the first thing is if you want to make this type of games try to prototype as much as you can that is to say look at this game It has certain characteristics in this case again Im supporting myself with platform games that have elements like these boxes that you saw that jump and from here on excuse the redundancy of the platforms with which the little figure the Player is going to interact and start making them obviously they dont have the final style anymore that would simply be either a texture a mesh or directly a mesh or the three that you want to adapt to that But at least for now the first thing is to start prototyping through these little boxes and well see how the Player interacts with this and I also took advantage of it I got a little ahead I started to change the Player because I was really crazy about that little figure by default in a real one thats another Well that would be a little more optional but no matter how much I think that because of the steps that have to be taken I think its also good to change it from the beginning and from here I have done it again Well Im starting to do it the prototypes because I dont even have them with a prototype yet I mean at least the level is assembled or something similar to that that can undergo changes in the future But at least it is assembled here I am starting So I created this in another folder Well here you can see the organization a bit the one I placed my blueprints which is for things that are going to have enemy logic I dont have So nothing I was doing some tests with this but I have this abandoned there and here if we come to War which is where I am managing Here the levels this one is going to be the world selection one I want to do something similar to Crash 2 that has a single exit and an elevator goes up It seems simple to me and I go there changing the levels and here I have the worlds Well these folders are like who says for decoration The one that is fuller is this one and here a bit of the levels that I am assembling this one would be the one that is more built

Prototyping levels

And its something that I like a little because obviously there are a lot of visual things missing here but still Hey Compared to other levels for example the initial one at least has a little more shape and is a little more pleasant by simply changing the boxes here for a color Well as you can see this I gave in Blender it was extremely silly a box a square I applied a bbel to it Well a while ago also some struts some questions it was this This is the original This one here and I was good at scaling it and I applied a material with if I remember correctly the full metal and it remains like this shiny and thats basically everything with that I have these nice boxes that look like glass and the rest are simply as you can suppose a square and Im changing it here a little bit the shape but again this is a prototype that Im making and well nothing automatically I port these steps here I will narrate them to you little by little in the following videos and at least I have some surfaces to jump and here I die like a There you can see that when I die that is when I fall and then that too I explain automatically restarts the level depending on how you die you have to take a life from him but the life control part is not yet managed or he directly dies and here we have other blueprints as I told you I have several here for example when it is red it already kills him so those little things I will explain how I did them later on for now I wanted to explain a little context of where where I am starting from and then explain to you a little bit how to make this type of blueprints that we have on the screen and other things that will escalate so nothing without more to say I hope you enjoyed this video feel free to comment on what you would like to implement based on what I am saying that I am making a platform type game and obviously also give your perspective if you require it or so you wish so without further ado see you in another video
