Google Keep - The best free and multiplatform app to save your notes - Software Development

Today I want to talk about a tool that has become essential for me: Google Keep. We always need a reliable and accessible place to store our notes and ideas, whether for development or daily life.

1. The Frustration with Evernote

Previously, I used Evernote for many years, but it gradually became excessively "corporate" and limiting:

  • Usage Restrictions: They began to reduce the number of notes that could be created and, eventually, limited use to only one notebook.
  • Costs and Advertising: The main problem is the high cost of the subscription for a functionality as simple as saving notes. Furthermore, the app constantly shows me popups to buy the paid version, which is very annoying.

Limited Synchronization: It only allows synchronization on two devices. This is insufficient for me, as I need to access my notes from my phone, my iPad, and my three computers.

Given these limitations, I migrated my workflow to Google Keep.

2. ✅ Google Keep: Free, Secure, and Accessible

Although many other apps may exist (feel free to comment on your favorites), I prefer Google's apps because I consider them safe for storing my texts.

  • Free and Accessible: It is a completely free application and is available for Android, iOS, and, of course, the web, which is crucial for me.
  • Cons: The text editing part could improve a lot, as it is quite basic.

3. Functionality: Labels Instead of Notebooks

Google Keep's scheme is different from what one might be used to (like Evernote's, where a notebook is created and then notes are placed inside it):

  • Create the Note: First, the note is created.
  • Assign the Label: Once created, a label is added to it, which acts as the "notebook" or folder.

It's a somewhat reversed flow, where the main management is through the label.

List Management: To create lists (which is what interests me most, for example, to list the pending developments for my DesarrolloLibre app or the topics for my videos), the only 'trick' is to place an asterisk, which turns into a bullet point to generate a simple list.

Note management is simple once you understand this functionality. Notes can be organized, color-coded, and viewed on any synchronized device. If you're looking for a simple, free application that allows you to access your daily or development notes without hassle, Google Keep is an excellent choice.

It's perfect for my day-to-day tasks and for noting down EVERYTHING I have to develop, the applications I'm going to create, their features and functionalities, so, as a software developer, I write down every idea I have in Google Keep.

I agree to receive announcements of interest about this Blog.

I give you my opinion why I consider Google Keep to be the best tool to save your notes of all kinds, personal and Software Development.
